La Sallians on swine flu scare: Worried but not scared

Usually at lunch time the coffee shop would be packed with a noisy crowd of students. But at noon Thursday, many tables were empty. Several people who came in were wearing medical face masks. "It's scary," said Avie, 21, one of four people seated at one table reviewing for a nursing board exam. "What the hell is happening?" The coffee shop is meters away from the huge De La Salle University (DLSU) campus on Taft Avenue in downtown Manila. On June 3, school officials suddenly announced they were closing the school for 10 days after a 21-year old female Japanese exchange student tested positive for the A(H1N1) flu virus. On Thursday, Health authorities said another Japanese student, a male, was also sickened with the virus. With authorities saying the infected Japanese female could have come into contact with up to 120 other people, there was noticeable unease among students who live near the campus. In the nearly empty cafe, anybody who sneezed was immediately looked at with suspicion. Outside the shop, Virgie, a cigarette vendor, said: "We are all scared – I don't want to infect my grandchildren." She explained she was just staying on to make some money but because of the shutdown, her earnings dwindled. Normally by midday she would have earned P800, instead her sales didn't amount to P500. One student, Justin, claimed that the infected foreigner was actually Korean, and that now, when he encountered anybody who looked Korean, "I try to move away or walk in a different direction." It's this kind of behavior - a precursor to panic - that Health Secretary Marianito Duque III said is worse than the flu itself. He told reporters that A(H1N1) is a mild form of influenza with less than a one per cent fatality rate. "You should fear dengue more than A(H1N1)," he said. On one of the white pillars outside DLSU’s building, a notice from Chancellor and president Armin Luistro attracted a small crowd. It said the school would remain shut until June 14. “The Academe community is advised to monitor flu-like symptoms, to stay away from crowds, and to practice good hygiene," it added. The vacant white halls of the university made it look like a ghostly museum, spacious and quiet. Katrina, who said she was the mother of an 18-year-old student, said she was trying to get to the registration office. “I’m worried but I’m not scared," she said. “I’m sure La Salle is on top of the situation and this entire thing could be gone in a jiffy." At the College of St Benilde (CSB), near the De La Salle complex, officials were giving away facemasks to anybody who wanted to wear them. Mae, a sophomore Hotel and Restaurant Management Student at CSB, said that when she felt the onset of a cold Wednesday morning she wasted no time having herself checked at the clinic. The nurse confirmed it was just a cold, prescribed vitamins and ordered her to wear a face mask. She claimed that the mask caused people to look at her suspiciously. "They think I might have it. They think I'm infected." Her friend, Jamie shrugged that he just ignored the looks. "The masks give us an added sense of security." Josa, another CSB student, was resentful that DLSU was closed down, but his own school wasn't. "Why do they have 10 days of quarantine? We share most of the facilities in school, eat at the same restaurants - shouldn't we be worried of being infected too?" Rowell, a Multimedia Arts student at CSB, said he didn't mind wearing a mask while rushing along the busy street of Vito Cruz. He just ignored the stares of passersby. "If they catch it, they're dead," he said. But as he stepped inside CSB, he, quickly took off his mask. “I’ll wear the mask outside, just not in my school. It’s embarrassing," he said. - GMANews.TV

Philippine school suspends classes due to flu

MANILA, Philippines – One of the Philippines' top universities has suspended classes for 10 days after a foreign student tested positive for swine flu, health officials said Wednesday.

The 21-year-old female exchange student at De La Salle University in Manila reported "very mild" symptoms on May 29, four days after classes started, Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said.

La Salle, which opens earlier than other schools due to its trimester system, has about 13,000 students.

School authorities have informed the student's classmates and teachers to monitor themselves for symptoms at home during the June 4-10 suspension, Duque said.

He said authorities are tracing about 120 people who may have had contact with the student, who arrived in the country May 12.

Duque refused to identify the nationality of the student pending notification of her embassy. The school's Marketing and Communication Office, which handles public inquiries, refused to give other details about her.

Duque advised all other students, faculty and school personnel to avoid crowded areas "as a precautionary measure" during the period.

The foreign student is the 22nd confirmed swine flu case in the Philippines. Fourteen have recovered and been sent home, Duque said.

The World Health Organization said Tuesday the disease has spread to 64 countries and infected nearly 19,000 people, causing 117 deaths.

Suspension of Classes

At first, I really thought that the news was just a joke. It was really shocking to know about the news! Our classes were suspended and will resume on June 15 because there is a confirmed case of swine flu in the campus。。。 I hope that the virus would stop spreading.

Update No. 32-Duque Lauds La Salle University Manila for Voluntarily Suspending Classes After Student Turns Positive for A(H1N1)

June 3, 2009

DOH Secretary Duque today lauded school authorities of the De La Salle University (DLSU) Manila at Taft Avenue for implementing a self-imposed temporary suspension of classes for 10 days beginning today after an international exchange student tested positive for Influenza A (H1N1).

This is in consonance with Response Level 3 of the Guidelines on A (H1N1) for schools which state that school authorities should suspend classes after detection of at least one confirmed case and there is no sustained community transmission.

The new confirmed case is a 21 year-old female foreign student who arrived in the country last May 12. According to DLSU officials, classes officially started on May 25 for the first trimester of this school year. The foreign student only reported very mild symptoms on May 29 which came to the attention of school authorities.

The student consulted a health facility on May 31where she was examined and tested for the presence of the virus through a throat swab. The specimen turned positive for A (H1N1) as confirmed today by RITM.

Duque said that the DOH is currently investigating and doing contact tracing to see if there were other exposed individuals related to this new case. Initial findings reveal that there is very limited exposure of other students to the confirmed case and that both DOH and school authorities can trace them.

Meanwhile, Duque already met the officials of DLSU to discuss the situation and come up with the next steps to prevent the spread of the virus to other students, faculty and other school staff.

Brother Armin Luistro FSC, President and Chancellor of the De La Salle University, expressed his full cooperation with the DOH on the ongoing containment measures and said that DLSU will immediately invoke the recommended measures contained in the Response Level System in Schools initially released by the DOH last May 31.

Starting tomorrow, June 4, classes will be suspended at the University and will last until June 14 in accordance with the guidelines set by the DOH.

The De La Salle University has already informed the students and faculty who were in the same class as the confirmed case to do self-monitoring of symptoms at home and to report immediately at designated hotlines if they become ill.

Meanwhile, Secretary Duque appealed to these students and school staff to temporarily avoid going to malls and other crowded areas during the period of class suspension.

As a precautionary measure, although they do not belong to the affected classes, all other students, faculty and personnel of DLSU should consider self-monitoring and avoiding crowded gatherings as well.

Secretary Duque thanked the officials of DLSU for keeping their school clinic open for any consultation during the period of class suspension. Students and faculty are therefore advised to report any symptom at this clinic which will in turn refer the cases to designated DOH referral facilities when necessary.

To date, the total number of confirmed cases of a (H1N1) in the country is now at 22.

Duque said that the three previously reported confirmed cases will be discharged today. To date, 14 of the 22 confirmed cases have already been sent home.

Since May 1, 2009, the DOH has monitored a total of 401 CUOs. Of these, 22 are positive A(H1N1) cases, 78 have pending laboratory results, and 301 are negative for A(H1N1) and have been discarded. There are 56 new Cases Under Observation (CUOs) today.

In their latest report, the World Health Organization reported 1,900 new cases and 16 deaths. There are now a total of 17,410 cases and 115 deaths from 62 reporting countries.
